Potent Synergistic Effects of the Zinc-Carnosine Combination
By: Jeremy Appleton, ND
Your gastrointestinal (GI) tract serves as a foundation for whole body health, functioning as an interface between the outside world and the body's inside world. Several common conditions and GI discomforts stem from the stomach's protective mucin barrier being compromised. If you experience heartburn, nausea, or bloating you may benefit from the soothing gastric support of natural agents like zinc-carnosine.

The Zinc L-Carnosine Connection
Zinc-carnosine is a novel ingredient that has been shown to provide GI benefits over zinc or L-carnosine supplementation taken either alone or in combination. When it is ingested into the stomach, it is thought to attach to areas of the gastric lining to help the natural protective and regenerative functions of gastric mucosal cells.

Zinc is a mineral that is a component of more than 300 enzymes and is involved in many biochemical pathways, including DNA and protein synthesis. It is essential for growth and plays a role in vision, hearing, taste sensation, spermatogenesis, sexual development, immune function, and wound healing. Zinc also functions as an antioxidant, helps protect cells, has an antiinflammatory effect, and has antiviral activity.

Carnosine is a di-peptide (or protein building block) composed of the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine and is naturally present in long-living cells such as muscle and nerves, where it plays a role as an antioxidant.

A Record of Relief
The efficacy and safety of zinc-carnosine for supporting GI mucosal health has been demonstrated in humans in numerous published doubleblind and open-label clinical trials. In fact, zinc-carnosine has been successfully used in Japan since the early 1990s. Among many benefits, it has been shown to assist the body's natural mechanisms for rapidly regenerating cells that make up the lining of the GI tract, especially in the presence of various stressors. While most digestive aids focus either on suppressing or neutralizing stomach acid, zinc-carnosine is unique in that it supports the natural protective mechanisms in the GI tract without suppressing stomach acid.* Instead, it strengthens the stomach's natural repair and immune defense capabilities, stabilizing the integrity of tissues not only of the stomach, but throughout the GI tract: in the mouth, small intestine, colon, and liver. It has also been shown to optimize the gastric balance of microflora in animals and humans.

How to Take Zinc-Carnosine
Most clinical trials of zinc-carnosine used 37.5 to 75 mg twice daily (before breakfast and at bedtime) for eight weeks. Talk to your healthcare professional or a member of the NEEDS Wellness Team to see if zinc-carnosine is right for you.
