First hand Experience Dealing with Mold
By Lee Ann & Kurt Billings

Lifestyle Tips:
1. Immediately remove yourself from the source of exposure. This step may seem obvious, but it is the step that people often sidestep when the source of structural mold and mycotoxins is in their home or workplace. It is not always easy to find another place to live or work, whichever the case may be.

2. Make sure your next place of residence or work is not also contaminated with structural molds or some other harmful environmental contaminant. Unfortunately, our family endured several exposures that occurred in temporary housing after Katrina.

3. Create a clean-sleeping room for each person in your family by using a HEPA air purifier, such as an Austin Air Purifier. If you are not able to purchase an air purifier for each bedroom, you can make a communal sleeping room until you are able to purchase more units, which is what we did on our limited budget after going through a natural disaster.

4. If immediately removing yourself from the source of exposure is not possible, which often occurs due to financial restrictions, minimize airborne exposures by opening doors and windows or by using HEPA air purifiers in all rooms or at least in the rooms most frequently used.

Nutrition Tips:
1.Remove all sugar and grains (bread, pasta, cereals, etc.) from the diet as sugars and converted sugars feed fungus (molds and yeasts) can rapidly multiply in the body. Eat organic vegetables and lean meats free of antibiotics and hormones.

2. Also remove from the diet foods that regularly contain high-levels of mycotoxins (corn, wheat, peanuts, cottonseed, sugar, for example). It is important to understand that people who are ill from mold-related exposures will often have their symptoms fluctuate from day to day or even hour to hour. Sure, this roller coaster of symptoms can be caused by environmental re-exposures, such as being in a mold-contaminated store, but oftentimes it is unknowingly caused by food. When our family was sick from mold exposure we had to do extensive research into which foods did and did not contain high levels of mycotoxins just so our family could eat!

3. Increase bioavailability of nutrients by juicing fresh, organic vegetables that naturally contain anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. During our recovery period we juiced carrots, garlic, ginger, and two thin slices of green apple (per eight ounces). We started slow with two ounces three times a day and built up to eight ounces three times a day. Even though the carrots and apple are a natural source of sugar, we found this combination to be a nutrient-filled, powerful fungal and bacterial fighter, which proved to play a significant role in our recovery. If you plan to juice carrots, we recommend the Champion Juicer as it is a workhorse that will withstand juicing carrots three times a day for years and years without having to replace the housing unit.

The above steps were responsible for approximately fifty percent of our family's recovery. The other fifty percent came from supplements that supported detoxification pathways, increased detoxification, neutralized toxins, and boosted the immune system.

In order for other people suffering from mold- and mycotoxin-related illnesses to benefit from our experience and perhaps avoid the large amount of trial and error we underwent, we have detailed information in our book, MOLD: The War Within, about the treatment plan that effectively restored our family's health, including research on mycotoxin-containing foods and all the supplements we used. This information is provided as an educational resource and should be discussed with a licensed healthcare professional, such as your treating physician or a certified nutritionist. To create a personalized plan, we suggest you read about the natural treatment plan that restored our family's health to familiarize yourself with the natural options for mold illness, and then consider consulting with a Wellness Educator at NEEDS, which is a free service offered to NEEDS customers.
