Getting to Know Christine Carlson,
NEEDS Wellness Educator

Christine Carlson, CN

Christine Carlson is a Certified Nutritionist, with a private practice in Syracuse, NY. She has also been working as a Wellness Educator at NEEDS for the past five years, giving wise and patient advice to NEEDS clients. We thought you might want to know a little more about Christine.

NEEDS: What are the most common ailments you encounter in both your private practice and with NEEDS clients?

Christine Carlson: I see a lot of digestive issues, such as IBS, candida, gastritis, and allergies (food and environmental), as well as weight loss. And of course, I see Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.

NEEDS: What do you consider to be your areas of expertise?

CC: Because I have so many clients coming to me with digestion problems, I have found very successful treatments. Alternative medicine offers so many effective treatments for digestive concerns, as compared to the options available in mainstream medicine. Another issue that people really need help with is designing healthy-eating plans. Education is really important and when people understand nutrition, they can make better choices. Gluten sensitivity is becoming more common, so that is a complicated topic I can offer guidance on. I also spend time sorting through the mountain of supplements that many people are taking, and help them find the key ones that work for them.

NEEDS: Do you have a list of supplements that you feel most people should take as a foundation?

CC: Definitely. I usually recommend a good multivitamin, antioxidant, essential fatty acids, and digestive enzymes.

NEEDS: Do you think the economy has changed people's perception of natural medicine?

CC: Yes, overall I think more people are looking for answers from the natural medicine field because they can't afford standard health care, and they are thinking more preventatively in order to stay healthy. However, people are being careful with their money, so they want to be sure to choose products that are going to really be effective.

NEEDS: And that is one of the things that you really help NEEDS clients with; you help them choose the best products, and they are very grateful for that. So what is your favorite part about working for NEEDS?

CC: It is the fact that people express their gratitude for this free service we provide. They really appreciate that they can talk to someone who is knowledgeable, because many people don't have access (regionally or financially) to natural medicine. It really makes me happy to serve those needs.
