CurcuVET® – The Answer to Inflammation in your Pets
By Kathi Head, ND

The Problem of Inflammation

Many of the health conditions that face companion animals and horses are associated with inflammation. Inflammation of the joints can cause arthritis and other problems that can curb your dog's enthusiasm for play or make it hard to get up the stairs. Inflammation in the intestinal tract – inflammatory bowel disease—can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss, and is a very common problem in cats as they age. Inflammation of the hoof (laminitis) can cause lameness in horses. Anti-inflammatory drugs used in conventional veterinary medicine, while helping with pain and inflammation, can cause serious damage to the GI tract, kidneys, and liver.

The Solution: Meriva®

But what if there was an effective solution that not only helped with pain and inflammation, but also protected the sensitive GI tract, liver, and kidneys from damage? Meriva®, a curcumin extract, is just such an ingredient. Meriva® has been shown to decrease inflammation in both dogs and horses with arthritis. Numerous research studies also demonstrate curcumin's benefits for liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory eye conditions, kidney failure, and cancer.

Meriva® Provides Superior Absorption

Meriva® is made from the flavonoid curcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that provides the yellow-golden color. Although curcumin is widely acclaimed for its health benefits, it is not very well absorbed; therefore, it needs to be taken in large quantities to achieve benefit. There are many curcumin products on the market, but Meriva® is unique because it is bound to phosphatidylcholine (PC), a substance found in high amounts in cell membranes. Complexing curcumin with PC helps usher it across the cell membrane, significantly increasing curcumin absorption. One recent study found Meriva® was absorbed 29-times better than unbound curcumin. Better absorption translates to better efficacy! In addition, the effective dosage is much smaller, no small advantage when you're supplementing your pets.

Meriva® Doesn't Taste Like Curry

While curcumin provides the yellow color in curry, it also provides some of the curry taste. You may like curry, but I doubt that it's top on Fido's list of favorites. One of the nice things about complexing curcumin with PC is that the taste gets masked as well. Better taste translates into better compliance.

CurcuVET: In Place of, or Along with, Prescription Medications

CurcuVET is the Thorne Vet product that contains Meriva®. Its potent anti-inflammatory effects may mean you don't have to use prednisone for inflammatory bowel disease in your cat, or NSAIDs like phenylbutazone for arthritis in your dog, or laminitis in your horse. While these medications can provide significant pain relief or even be life-saving, the benefits could come at a cost of organ toxicity and other side effects. NSAIDs are known for their potential to cause damage to the kidneys, liver, or sensitive lining of the stomach and intestines. In addition to primary treatment for arthritis, liver disease, kidney failure, and inflammatory bowel disease, curcumin has been shown to protect the GI tract, liver, and kidneys from the effects of NSAIDs, antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and other medications. Therefore, even if your pet needs to take a prescription medication, CurcuVET should be considered as a complementary treatment.

CurcuVET: For Animals of All Sizes

Curcuvet comes in three convenient dosing sizes: CurcuVET-SA50 is provided in small capsules for cats and small dogs; CurcuVET-SA150 is in larger capsules for medium-to-large dogs; and CurcuVET-EQ is in a powder for horses and dogs the size of horses (giant-breed dogs). CurcuVET should be part of a health regimen for any animal suffering from a chronic inflammatory condition.
