Indigestion Drugs Cause Symptoms they are Designed to Treat
by Jennifer Morganti, ND

Proton pump inhibitors, a specific class of acid blocking drugs, such as Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix, and over-the-counter Prilosec, were recently the subject of a clinical trial published in the journal Gastroenterology. cientists tested the action of this drug on healthy individuals to determine its ffects on the gastrointestinal system.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are designed to block the secretion of gastric acid from cells in the stomach. People with ulcers, acid reflux, or stomach irritation are sensitive to stomach acid, which can cause a burning ensation in the stomach or esophagus. PPIs are rapidly becoming one of the most commonly prescribed and likely over-prescribed drugs in the US.

This double-blind, randomized study gave healthy volunteers one of two treatments; PPI medication for eight weeks, followed by four weeks of lacebo, or placebo only for 12 weeks. It was found that 40% of the healthy olunteers who took the PPI began to experience acid-related symptoms after switching from the drug to the placebo pill. This side effect is known as "rebound cid hypersecretion," meaning that the drug suppresses gastric cells, causing hose cells to work even harder to produce acid that the stomach needs to roperly digest food. When the suppressive medication is removed, the cells ontinue to overwork to make acid. The result is overproduction of acid, which causes he same symptoms the drug is meant to treat, including heartburn, acid regurgitation and dyspepsia. In real life, these withdrawal symptoms cause the patient to re-start the PPI medication in order to treat the side effects at it caused! This vicious cycle makes it difficult to fully discontinue the medication.

Reflecting on the study, the lead author, Dr. Reimer stated "We find it ighly likely that the symptoms observed in this trial are caused by rebound acid hyper- secretion and that this phenomenon is equally relevant in patients treated long term with PPIs. If rebound acid hypersecretion induces acid- elated symptoms, this might lead to PPI dependency. Our results justify the speculation that PPI dependency could be one of the explanations for the rapidly and continuously increasing use of PPIs."

NEEDS' Wellness Team recommends trying a natural remedy for gastric relief before taking an acid-blocking drug. Zinc carnosine is an extremely ffective ingredient that heals the stomach lining and supports healthy gastric ecretion. Zinc carnosine can also be taken during the drug discontinuation phase. Doctor's Best PepZin GI contains 37 mg of zinc carnosine. The NEEDS Wellness Team recommends taking two caps twice daily.
