Study: Omega-3 Lessens Moderate Depression in Mature Women
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team

A new study shows that EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid derivative, may help alleviate depressive symptoms in middle-aged women.

According to a study published in the February 2009 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women with moderate to severe psychological distress and depressive symptoms were given either 1.05 g EPA or placebo for a total of eight weeks. Various psychological tests were used to measure their symptoms. Women who tested as severely depressed did not have significant benefit from taking EPA as compared to those who took the placebo. But women with mild to moderate depression did benefit significantly from taking EPA as compared to the placebo.

Many other studies have supported this theory. It has been shown that worldwide, countries that consume higher quantities of fish experience lower rates of mood disorders. Omega 3s are a critical component of the fatty structure of the brain and nerves and contribute to their health and proper function. Omega 3s were a dominant part of the human diet for millennia.

The NEEDS Wellness Team recommends Nordic Naturals' EPA, which provides a concentrated source of EPA, in 2 softgels containing 850 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA (or docosahexaenoic acid, another omega-3 fatty acid derivative). All Nordic Naturals fish oils surpass all pharmaceutical standards for freshness and purity. Every batch is third-party tested, showing no detected levels of heavy metals, dioxins, or PCBs.
