Natural "PC" Option for Ulcerative Colitis
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team Recently published research shows hope for a natural alternative as support for Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or chronic steroid-refractory ulcerative colitis. UC is a bowel disease that involves inflammation of the inner surface layers of the colon, accompanied by symptoms of diarrhea, fever, pain, and weight loss, which can lead to serious health effects. Treatment can be difficult and often only offers partial symptom control. Steroid therapy is a common treatment; however, it has side effects and is not a long-term solution. A recent study at University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, considered whether an insufficient level of phosphatidylcholine (PC) in colonic mucus is a possible pathogenetic factor for UC. A randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled trial used PC at a dosage of 2 g/day for the study group. This was shown to help patients achieve complete steroid withdrawal as well as a significant lessening of UC symptoms. In fact, 24 out of 30 patients receiving the PC discontinued steroid therapy without symptoms worsening. PC, a safe and effective nutritional supplement, can always be considered in the general management of ulcerative colitis, and specifically for steroid withdrawal.
