MENOPAUSE A PROCESS OF CHANGE
by Jery Cochern, C.N.C.

For many years, women have been told that hot flashes, mood swings, and associated discomforts stem from hormone deficiencies. But, while these deficiencies may trigger such discomforts, they are not the underlying cause.

Hormones are secreted into the bloodstream by various glands. Estrogen and progesterone are created primarily in the ovaries and the adrenal glands, both of which are parts of what Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) calls the kidney system.

TRUE HORMONE DEFICIENCIES occur when this system grows too weak to function properly.

FALSE HORMONE DEFICIENCIES occur when plenty of hormones are produced, but the blood is too weak to deliver them to the cells they're meant to serve.

While hormone replacement may calm the symptoms of menopause, it does nothing to strengthen the kidney system or the blood. Thus, while it helps women feel better, it does nothing to keep them from growing weaker.

In addition to the ovaries and adrenal glands, the kidney system includes the brain, bones, urinary and reproductive tracts, etc. As this system weakens further, its parts weaken with it. As a consequence of this, women may begin to notice additional symptoms related to the kidney system.

BRAIN Loss of memory, acuity, cognizance, and the early stages of senility.

BONES Loss of bone mass and bone density.

URINARY TRACT Incontinence and the loss of ability to filter poisons into urine.

REPRODUCTIVE TRACT Vaginal dryness and loss of libido.

Utilizing a holistic approach to health care is essential because it addresses both the symptoms and the cause. Thus, menopause must be addressed by combining hormone balancing factors with additional agents that rebuild integrity in the kidney system and in the blood.

ISOFLAVONES AND BLACK COHOSH

A complete package of natural hormone balancing factors such as isoflavones, phyto-estrogens, and progesterone enhancers, along with some of the world's most tonic herbs, work synergistically to provide menopausal support for women. Researchers believe such factors protect women against midlife discomforts, as well as more serious disease. By plugging into estrogen receptors, they serve as safe, gentle estrogen supplements. While occupying these receptors, they may also inhibit dangerous, synthetic estrogens from downloading their biological influence.

Black cohosh is an herb that grows throughout most of the world. It has been used, for centuries, for a wide variety of female complaints. Isoflavones and black cohosh have been studied extensively in recent years. Vast majorities of women engaged in these studies have reported significant relief from hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, anxiety, depression, and other midlife discomforts, all without unpleasant side effects.

While there is little doubt that the symptoms of menopause are triggered by hormone imbalances or deficiencies, there is great disagreement as to why these imbalances or deficiencies occur. Modern medicine holds that they are part of nature's plan, however, not every culture throughout history, has suffered equally at this time of life. Menopause distress was actually relatively rare before the industrial age, and in many cultures, it still is.

Although conventional physicians have prescribed powerful hormone drugs to help women overcome hot flashes and other mid-life discomforts, the natural products industry has also offered a variety of hormones from soy, wild yam, and other plants. Nevertheless, from a holistic point of view, this is not enough.

If women want to feel their best and insure their best possible health in the future, they must also strengthen their organs and glands whose weakness caused the problems in the first place. If this does not take place, more serious health challenges may develop later in life.
