Brand New Year
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team

There's nothing like a brand new year to get us thinking about how to feel and look better. For many of us, that means losing weight. There are a variety of approaches available that claim to help shed those unwanted, unhealthy pounds, but what many of us need to do, is abandon our old way of thinking!

The "weight loss puzzle" is made up of several pieces, pieces such as diet, exercise, and the use of supplements. Below are my weight loss supplement suggestions, which accompany an article, written by Laurel Sterling Prisco, a Registered Dietitian now providing consultations as a member of the N.E.E.D.S. Health Panel.

Keep in mind, that while my supplement suggestions can help you lose weight, they also provide many other healthy rewards.

MULTIVITAMIN: provides nutrients often lacking in low-calorie dieting.

CHROMIUM: balances blood sugar: lowers it in diabetics and raises it in hypoglycemics. Reduces sugar cravings, builds muscle, lowers cholesterol. 200 mcg three times a day.

B-VITAMINS: necessary to help regulate blood sugar, especially niacin (taken in the form of niacinamide to reduce the flushing often associated with niacin), thiamin, pantothenic acid, and biotin. Biotin alone (at 3000 mcg per day) has been shown to stabilize blood sugar and eliminate sugar cravings.

L-GLUTAMINE: reduces sugar and alcohol cravings.Works very quickly when you open the capsule and hold the powder under your tongue. Dose: 500-1000 mg three times per day.

5-HTP: has been shown to reduce appetite, thereby promoting weight loss. Studies have shown that 600 – 900 mg per day have reduced weight significantly, although many patients of mine have used half that dose and reduced weight. Start with 50-100 mg 20 minutes before meals, increase after two weeks if you haven't lost at least one pound per week. Do not take if you are taking antidepressant medications.

COCONUT OIL: contains medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which have been the topic of numerous studies on weight loss. The result is MCTs seem to be very effective in promoting weight loss if one reduces long chain triglycerides. Dose: 1-2 Tbs per day.
