Product Description: One of the nice things about natural cleaning is that instead of buying a dozen different cleaning products developed for a dozen different tasks, you buy only a few natural substances and use each in many different ways. Lemon juice, vinegar, borax, and baking soda have been used as natural cleaners for years, and even if you don't know anything about natural cleaning, your grandmother probably told you to use vinegar and water to clean your windows. Sodium hexametaphosphate is a relative newcomer to the natural cleaning kit, even though it has been sold for years as a water softener (a scented version is available under the trade name Calgon). It is nothing more than naturally occurring sodium carbonate (a mineral taken from deposits in the western United States) heated together with a product of phosphate rock. It has no odor and is safe to use when dissolved in water. The only remote hazard may be that the dry crystals are relatively sharp and may aggravate your skin if handled too much. Sodium Hexametaphosphate has some amazing capabilities for such a simple compound. Here are half a dozen ways you can use it around your home.
Packaging: Brown Bag & Cellophane Bag
Ingredients: Sodium Hexametaphosphate.
Suggested Use: 1. Laundry Bleach - Sodium Hexametaphosphate doesn't work like a chlorine bleach to get your clothes white. Instead, it gets rid of the dull, dingy, grey or yellow film that builds up on your fabrics after repeated washings with soap or detergent. In fact, the first time you use it, you will be astounded to see the suds that are released from clothes and bedding you thought were clean. Using sodium hexametaphosphate on a regular basis will prevent dulling film from forming and keep your fabrics bright. How much sodium hexametaphosphate you use will depend on the hardness of your water. Start with 1/8 cup to a washerload of water. Keep adding it a bit at a time until the water feels slippery between your fingers. Make note of this amount and use it for your normal wash. To remove years of accumulated washing film, run laundry items through a whole wash cycle using twice as much sodium hexametaphosphate as you would normally use, and no soap or detergent. For regular laundry, add the sodium hexametaphosphate first, then use only half the amount of soap you previously used. If you have not been using soap for your clothes, sodium hexametaphosphate will help tremendously.
2. Dishwashing Detergent - Sodium hexametaphosphate is probably the best substance you can use in your dishwasher. Not only does it cut grease and leave dishes spotless, it also acts as a scale inhibitor and will actually clean your dishwasher with each washing. Just use the same amount of sodium hexametaphosphate as you would use dishwasher detergent and watch your dishes sparkle!
3. Dishwashing Liquid Booster - Because sodium hexametaphosphate is a water softener, it will boost the cleaning action of soap for any use. Just add a few tablespoons to your dishpan (remember to use the amount that makes the water feel slippery) and use half as much dishwashing liquid. No more water spots on hand washed dishes either.
4. Window Cleaner - Sodium hexametaphosphate will work as well on your windows as it will on your dishes. Just dissolve about a teaspoon each of sodium hexametaphosphate and liquid soap with warm water in a spray bottle. You can also use this solution on glass shower doors to dissolve mineral buildup (if necessary, make the solution a little stronger).
5. Bubble Bath - No, sodium hexametaphosphate won't foam up into bubbles, but what it will do is make a little liquid soap froth all over the place. Again add it a little at a time, dissolving it in your bathwater until the water feels slippery. A wonderful bath is to use sodium hexametaphosphate, liquid soap, and a couple of sliced lemons. You'll have a fragrant, luxurious bath that will make your skin softer and smoother than you can imagine.
6. Hair Rinse - Does natural soap shampoos leave your hair feeling sticky? Try rinsing with a solution of sodium hexametaphosphate and the soap film will come right out.
