Healthy Living Tidbits
We hear from Dr. Michael Murray, N.D., that his lupus patients enjoy remarkable benefits from flaxseed oil (Barlean's Lignan-Rich Flax Oil, one to three tablespoons daily); pancreatin (8-10x), 350 to 700 mg three times daily between meals; and Adrenal Cortex Extract (from Enzymatic Therapy, 750 mg daily).
Some 20 million Americans suffer from gallstones. Two dietary supplements—vitamin C and enterically coated peppermint oil—may be extremely helpful. Vitamin C is a key nutrient required for preventing cholesterol from turning into bile. Menthol, the primary constituent of peppermint oil, is also known to help dissolve gallstones. Be sure your peppermint oil capsules are enterically coated (e.g., Peppermint Plus from Enzymatic Therapy).
LYCOPENE CAPSULES REDUCE CANCER RISK
L. Stephen Coles, M.D., Ph.D., reports from the recent meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Philadelphia where researchers say that lycopene supplements (15 mg per capsule once a day, where 15 mg is the equivalent of one pound of tomatoes) were significant in reducing the risk for many types of cancer, including prostate (tumor size and aggressiveness), lung, stomach, pancreatic, colorectal, esophageal, oral, breast, and cervical cancer.
NATURAL SUPPORT FOR CHEMOTHERAPY
Here's our standard support formula for anyone undergoing cancer chemotherapy: selenium, 200 to 400 mcg daily; high-dose preformed vitamin A (monitored by a qualified health professional), vitamin C, up to 19 grams daily (use Ester-C® if you suffer stomach upset); Cell Forté with IP6 and Inositol™, six to eight grams daily; and Mega-Zyme (from Enzymatic Therapy) to denature cancer cells ' protective coatings. Other natural medicines may also be added—as determined in consultation with a qualified health professional.
NATURAL ORAL CARE PRODUCTS WORK BETTER THAN COLGATE, LISTERINE
Tired of artificial dyes and sweeteners with carcinogenic effects in your toothpaste and mouthwash? According to a recent study at the New York University College of Dentistry, The Natural Dentist Herbal Toothpaste and Gum Therapy outperformed Colgate Total for reducing gingivitis and gingival bleeding. The Natural Dentist Herbal Toothpaste and Gum Therapy mouthrinse inhibited bacteria more effectively than Listerine.
BETTER SEX WITH AFRICAN BARK MEDICINE
Sex therapist Dr. Roger Libby says his men patients can increase the volume of their prostatic secretions during sexual intercourse when they use standardized extracts of the African bark medicine Pygeum africanum (e.g., Nettle & Pygeum with Pumpkin from Enzymatic Therapy).
LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE WITH VITAMIN C
Researchers report that persons with the highest blood levels of vitamin C have the lowest blood pressure. We recommend that persons with high blood pressure take at least six to eight grams of vitamin C daily. If stomach acidity is a problem, use Ester-C®-based formulas.
NATURAL CHOLESTEROL LOWERING MEDICINE
The statin drugs are losing favor among medical practitioners for lowering their patients' cholesterol levels due to studies showing carcinogenic activity. Niacin, a member of the B complex family, has actually been proven more thoroughly to lower cholesterol levels than many medically prescribed drugs but flushing makes pure crystalline niacin uncomfortable for many persons—while time-release forms may impair liver function. Many doctors say their patients receive excellent benefits with inositol hexaniacinate, a safe, flush-free form of niacin used in Europe for over 30 years, now available from Solgar and Enzymatic Therapy.
MEMORY LOSS/MILD ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Huperzine serrata, an herb from China, is the source of a potent extract that has been shown in experimental and clinical studies to benefit persons with mild memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. This natural, safe extract can be combined with phosphatidylserine and acetyl L-carnitine, two other nutrients that may augment huperzine's benefits. One great formula: MAXIQ10 from Naturally Vitamins.
WHAT'S THAT, YOU SAY?
Insufficient amounts of vitamin B12 or folic acid may cause hearing loss in elderly women, according to a study in the March American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Investigators at the University of Georgia assessed hearing function and blood levels of vitamin B12 and folates in 55 healthy women ages 60 to 71. Women with impaired hearing had 38 percent lower levels of vitamin B12 and 31 percent lower levels of folate than women with normal hearing. These nutrients are key to maintaining efficient blood flow and nervous system function, according to researchers. We recommend that all women over 55 take 400 mcg of folate and up to 1,000 mcg daily of vitamin B12. It is critical to use a bio-active form of vitamin B12. Methylcobalamin, sold under the brand name Bioactive-B12, is the only active form of Vitamin B12 sold in tablet form in the United States. Bioactive-B12 is available from Enzymatic Therapy.
