Glyphosate: A Root Cause of Chronic Inflammation?
By Zach Bush, MD

The weed killer Glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp®, was first patented and introduced by Monsanto for agricultural use in 1974. Later, it was marketed to consumers as a household herbicide. It is also sprayed in staggering quantities on most commercially-grown staple crops, including wheat, corn, soybeans, beets, cotton, canola, and alfalfa. Since last year, when the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a "probable human carcinogen," there has been a lot of media coverage on the potential health risks associated with the use of this herbicide.

Glyphosate as a Desiccant
What many people do not know is that since 1992, glyphosate has been widely used as a "ripening agent" or desiccant on wheat and many other grains. This application stresses or kills the plants, which accelerates drying and speeds the ripening of the grain immediately before harvest.

Safer than Salt? Not!
In 1996, New York's attorney general sued Monsanto over the company's use of "false and misleading advertising" about RoundUp®. That case resulted in Monsanto agreeing to stop calling Roundup "biodegradable" and to pull ads claiming that Roundup was "safer than table salt", "practically nontoxic", and "stayed where you put it". Read more

Tips to Control Seasonal Allergies

For most people the first hints of spring generate anticipation for warmer, sunnier days, but for millions of Americans it also conjures images of the dreaded allergy season. During this time, when the air is thick with microscopic plant particles, allergy sufferers experience immune imbalances from mast cells that cause excess histamine. This triggers symptoms, such as itchy eyes, sneezing, and sniffling. Herbs and nutrients can offer relief without side effects and they tend to be most effective when started a few weeks before the allergy season hits.

Quercetin, found in Querciplex and BCQ, is especially effective for allergy symptom overload because it stabilizes mast cell membranes and prevents the release of histamine and other inflammatory agents. Due to its antioxidant effects, quercetin can inhibit inflammatory processes mediated by leukotrienes, hyaluronidase (collagendestroying enzymes), and lysosomal enzymes (promoters of localized inflammation).

Quercetin works to strengthen the cell membrane of the mast cells; however, it does take time. One may need to take it for 3 to 6 weeks to notice its antihistamine effect and it's more effective if taken preventively before the allergy season begins and it's continued throughout the season. Read more

New Research: Can Diet Influence Bone Strength?
By Jen Morganti, ND, NEEDS Education Director

Osteoporosis is still a common disease, despite the extensive knowledge we have gained from the vast amount of research that has been conducted on this bone disease. Osteoporosis is found more commonly in women as it relates to hormonal changes, but don't be misled— men can develop it as well. The disease occurs when the structure of the bone deteriorates, which lowers its strength and density. The weakened bones then become fragile and vulnerable to fracture, even from a simple fall. Bone loss tends to occur as we age and when combined with weaker muscles, slower reflexes, and poor balance, falls are more likely to lead to fractures.

There are various pharmaceutical medications on the market that treat osteoporosis, but their success rates are low because the way that they rebuild bone still leaves bones brittle and weak. The optimal method of preventing fractures is a pre-emptive approach, focusing on minimizing bone loss in later years, rather than trying to rebuild deteriorated bones. This goal is very achievable by following some specific lifestyle recommendations that are simple, but require discipline.

1) Commit to weight-bearing exercise, 4-5 times weekly. This includes lifting weights, jogging, or any activity that jars the bones, which triggers osteoblasts to build more bone tissue.

2) Avoid acid-blocking drugs entirely. We need gastric acid, as it is required to absorb minerals, such as calcium. Read more
