The Power of Fruit
By Shannon Morehouse, MA, CHHC

As a marathon runner and a triathlete, I rely heavily on nutrients that can keep me healthy every day and can assure that my workouts and races are successful. You do not need to be an endurance athlete to reap the benefits of these fruits. While these fruits can power me as an athlete, they can power you to conquer several common health ailments!

Vita Coco is 100% pure coconut water; it's an all-natural, super-hydrating, fat-free, cholesterol- free, nutrient-packed, potassium-stacked, mega-electrolyte super water. I drink this when I run my marathons and it keeps me energized for all 26.2 miles! Electrolytes are incredibly important for anyone when they are out in the heat, whether they're lounging or doing lawn work. Some of the many additional benefits of coconut water include: helps promote weight loss, helps fight viruses, boosts poor circulation, aids digestion by removing toxins, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, helps break up kidney stones, and reduces urinary problems.

Cheribundi cherry juice is my go-to drink for antioxidants, which I need to combat the toll that over 15 hours of training puts on my body each week. One 8-ounce bottle of Cheribundi cherry juice contains the equivalent of 50 tart cherries! Research backs the power of this cherry juice. A recent study found that drinking two 8-ounce bottles of Cheribundi cherry juice a day reduced muscle soreness post workout, reduced inflammation markers in the blood, improved sleep, and reduced oxidative stress blood markers.

Vitamin C is an essential antioxidant for athletes and nonathletes alike. The most natural form of vitamin C on earth comes from amla, a fruit that grows in India. Ayurvedic practitioners use amla paste to treat a number of maladies, including asthma, coughs, fevers, upset stomach, and skin diseases. Studies have shown that amla can help regulate hemoglobin levels as well as blood-sugar; it can also boost your metabolism! This whole-food form of vitamin C with naturally-occurring bioflavonoids assimilates 12 times more than synthetic vitamin C. A 2010 study determined that of 119 berries and fruits, amla had the highest concentration of antioxidants. Use amla to defend yourself and support your health.
