Bones are Better with Vitamin D AND Calcium
Brought to you from the NEEDS Wellness Team Vitamin D. There has been at lot studied about it lately. What isn't it good for? Proper vitamin D supplementation (in the form of Cholecalciferol or vitamin D3) has been used effectively with such conditions as Crohn's disease, depression, Celiac disease, hypertension, not to mention its well-established connection to bone health. A recent study takes us back to the basics: vitamin D is indeed very important for building strong bones, but not on its own. Its benefits are notably improved when combined with calcium, likely because it enhances the absorption of this important mineral. A recent study evaluated four different osteoporosis clinical trials. It was determined that vitamin D (at doses of 700 – 800 IU) plus calcium (at doses of 500–1200 mg) helped build bone enough to reduce fractures by a significant 18%, especially when compared to vitamin D alone and placebo. Fractures from osteoporosis significantly increase the rate of death, due to progressive complications. In addition to taking calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, such as weight lifting, is critical to building bone density, preventing fractures, and reducing mortality rates. Calcium Magnesium Citrate with Vitamin D, from Natur-Tyme, is one of our favorite combinations. The calcium and magnesium are both in citrate form, which is highly bioavailable. This formula also includes bioperine, an herbal extract which enhances the absorption of all ingredients. Eight capsules provide over 1000 mg of calcium and over 500 IU of vitamin D. There are no added binders or fillers in this formula, making it the perfect choice for sensitive individuals. |
