The Secret Life of Mushrooms

Mushrooms have been featured prominently in the diets of many civilizations throughout the world dating back to almost 4,000 years ago. Modern research is just now beginning to understand their many health benefits. Mushrooms belong to the kingdom of living organisms known as fungi. Today, there are over 100,000 species of mushrooms worldwide.

The World's Finest Fungi
Solaray's organically grown, fermented mushrooms are cultivated and processed in a certified organic GMP facility in the United States under highly controlled conditions. The growing facility is equipped with state of the art High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration and uses a sterile, clean room environment. The potencies of each mushroom strain are maintained using cryogenic storage technology to preserve the fungal cultures and their bioactivity.

The mycelial biomass is cultured on certified organic, gluten-free whole oats that have been steam and pressure sterilized. After cooling, the oats are inoculated with the pure mushroom strains and then sealed in engineered "bioreactor" growing bags equipped with air filters to help exclude any contaminants and to allow the cultures to breathe during incubation.

A unique Solid State Fermentation process is utilized to develop these fermented mushrooms. Solid State Fermentation is a process where the mushrooms digest a non-liquid grain substrate (oats) under aerobic conditions, with oxygen to convert the grain into mushroom tissue—i.e. the mycelium.

The medicinal mushroom mycelium produces an array of enzymes and secondary metabolites to accomplish this fermentation, which includes an extra-cellular digestive process that liquefies the nutrients in the oat substrate and enables absorption across the mushroom cell wall and conversion into tissue. Grown in the bioreactor bags for 30 to 80 days, the mycelium digests the oats until the grains vanish, leaving behind a solid mycelium biomass

Harvesting is done right as the mushroom's fruiting bodies begin to develop, at peak maturation, to ensure the highest level of nutrients. The biomass is then dehydrated to reduce the moisture content. Temperatures never exceed 118 degrees in order to preserve the live enzymes, protein structure, and the many bioactivities of each mushroom species.

Organically Grown Fermented Reishi
Originating in China and Japan over 2,000 years ago, Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), also known as Ling Zhi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is one of the most revered herbs in all of Asia. Reishi contains numerous biologically active compounds including polysaccharides, such as beta glucans and triterpenes, as well as glycoproteins, L-ergothioneine, and ergosterols. Research suggests that Reishi can promote healthy immune system balance, which provides support for your immune system to function optimally.

Reishi contains a class of plant compounds known as triterpenes. The types of triterpenes found in Reishi include ganoderic acids, lucidenic acids, and sterols. Organically Grown Fermented Chaga
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is believed to have originated in the Siberian region of Russia thousands of years ago. The name Chaga is derived from the Russian word for mushroom, "czaga." Chaga is an irregular shaped, black polypore mushroom. Instead of gills, polypore mushrooms typically release spores through pores underneath their caps. In the wild, Chaga is parasitic to the birch trees it attaches itself to, drawing its food from the nutrients of the tree. Chaga mushrooms cause a condition known as "heart rot," decaying the heartwood of the tree it infects.

Chaga contains both superoxide dimutase (SOD) enzymes, one of the body's most powerful antioxidants and the polysaccharides known as Beta Glucans. Chaga also contains a plant sterol known as lanosterol. Lanosterol may provide nutritive support for cell membrane integrity and the endocrine system. Chaga contains a class of phytochemicals known as terpenoids, including betulinic acid and betulin, which are believed to provide nutritive support for healthy immune system function and antioxidant support.

Organically Grown Fermented Lion's Mane
Native to Asia, Lion's Mane mushrooms have been used as both a food and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years. Lion's Mane has no real cap and no stem. Instead, it sports icicle-like tendrils coming out from a single clump. Lion's Mane mushrooms are saprotrophs, meaning they feed on dead material.
