About the Author: Dr. Robert Mayer was born in 1934 in Newark, New Jersey. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from Rutgers University in 1956, he practiced pharmacy. During his years as a business owner, he owned two drug stores, and a number of dry cleaning stores. He believes the highly toxic chemicals used in the dry cleaning industry caused him to develop Chemical Sensitivity (CS). In 1962 he sold his businesses and entered graduate school at Rutgers University, receiving a PhD in History in 1967.
In 1976 he obtained a post doctoral degree in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy from the American Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, thus becoming a Psychohistorian and a clinician. During these years he was a tenured Professor of Psychohistory at Kean University, Union, New Jersey, a fellow, senior instructor, and Director of the clinic at the American Institute, as well as in private practice in New York City.
Dr. Mayer's private practice specialized in dissociated states, Multiple Personality Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He was a pioneer in the treatment of dissociated states and childhood sexual abuse, and considered one of the experts in New York. He was interviewed on national television over 123 times by such prominent interviewers as Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes, Larry King, Phil Donahue, Sally Jesse Raphael and others.
In addition, he has written over seven books including Through Divided Minds, Doubleday, 1988, and Satan's Children, Putnam, 1990. He has also written numerous articles for Our Toxic Times, and for the Human Ecology Action League (HEAL) on various subjects related to MCS (referred to as CS in this book).
Dr. Mayer realized that he had become chemically sensitive in the 1980's, consulted with and was treated by every physician in the New York Metropolitan area that supposedly had expertise in this illness without success, or receiving a definitive diagnosis. In 1991, he was finally diagnosed by William Rea M.D., and spent six weeks at his clinic in Dallas, Texas.
At one point his illness became so severe that, after trying to make four different New York City dwellings "safe", he gave up on the city and moved to the New Jersey shore. There he reconstructed a "safe" house on the beach, and recovered enough to resume teaching at Kean and his practice in New York.
At present he has retired from his practice in New York, but still teaches at Kean University. From his own life experiences with CS and professional training, he is well equipped to help those with CS adjust to and learn to survive and thrive with CS. His current practice consists of phone consultations or in-person sessions restricted to those with chemical sensitivity.
