Ask our Wellness Educators

Q: Dear NEEDS Wellness Educator,

I'm confused about whether or not I need to take a multivitamin. My physician says my diet is fine and I get all the nutrients I need from food. Is this true? And what multivitamin would you recommend if I do need one? Thanks for your advice!

~ KR – Boise, ID

DR. JEN'S ANSWER:
Dear KR,

In an ideal world, we would be eating a perfect, plant-based, organic diet that provided us with all the nutrients we could possibly need. But even if we were able to achieve that goal, there still isn't a guarantee that we're getting the optimal amount of all the vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that our body requires.

In reality, there are a lot of variables that factor into the quality of nutrition that plants actually deliver. Much of our agricultural soil has been depleted of essential nutrients due to erosion, compromising the quality of our food. Hybridization of plants has also lessened nutrient levels of plants. The hybridization process tends to select for sweetness or shelf-life rather than high nutrient levels, which tends to lean towards a bitter flavor. Cooking vegetables diminishes vitamins and minerals as well. And who knows what we are getting with the GMO foods?

Many of us would benefit from supplementation because of all the challenges of eating healthy, along with the obstacles mentioned above. A good quality multi-vitamin is an excellent way to fill in the gaps. In fact, several years ago, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that people who take multivitamins have less risk of developing chronic disease.

NutriNEEDS Advanced Daily is a complete multivitamin made without fillers or excipients. It offers bioavailable forms of vitamins, such as B12 as methylcobalamin, B6 as P-5-P, and folic acid as 5-MTHF. The mineral forms are equally bioactive, many of them in the form of bisglycinate or glycinate chelates. The vitamins and minerals are readily absorbed and need little or no conversion to be utilized in the body.

Advanced Daily also has accessory nutrients that usually aren't found in multivitamins. It contains 100 mg CoQ10 for mitochondrial support and an extra boost of energy. It also offers additional antioxidants, such as grape seed extract, lipoic acid for detoxification, lutein for healthy eyes, as well as boron and vanadium for balanced blood sugar levels.

The take away message here is that utilizing a multivitamin is always beneficial to your health, especially considering nutrient-deficient soil, the hybridization process, and GMOs have altered the quality of our food— making our quest for optimum health more difficult to achieve. A high-quality multivitamin is the best way to ensure you're getting all the nutrients necessary to maintain your health and avoid deficiencies. I hope this information has been helpful and good luck!

Yours in Good Health,
Dr. Jen
