Supplements for a Healthy Heart Celebrate Valentine's Day with these Heart-Healthy Nutrients!

Fish Oil
Uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack or failure, or kidney failure. Research has indicated that the omega-3 essential fatty acids from fish oil can help regulate blood pressure. It can also lower triglycerides, the most common fats found in food. High triglycerides indicate a high risk for heart attacks. Omega fats can also slow atherosclerosis, the growth of harmful plaque on artery walls. Rapidly growing or unstable plaques can rupture and cause clots. The body responds to plaque with chronic inflammation, which can lead to blood clots, heart attack and stroke.

Garlic
Scientific studies show that aged garlic extract (AGE), which is odorless and richer in antioxidants than fresh or other forms of garlic preparations, is more effective in boosting immunity and protecting against cardiovascular disease, aging, and drug toxicity. AGE is produced by extracting and aging organic fresh garlic at room temperature for 20 months, thus converting garlic's more unstable substances which are generally not available to the body, to more stable, bioavailable, and health-promoting substances. Garlic aged in this way contains stable, water-soluble sulfur constituents, which are powerful antioxidants. They also offer higher bioavailability, with 98 percent absorption into the blood.

Magnesium
Magnesium may play a role in reducing coronary (heart) vascular constriction, increasing coronary artery blood flow, and preventing arrhythmias. Inadequate magnesium levels and poor absorption are associated with the development of hypertension, cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis, and stroke. Evidence exists that low stores of magnesium actually increases the risk of a person having arrhythmias, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular complications. In general, higher magnesium levels are associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease.

CoQ10
Studies show supplementing with 100 mg or 200 mg/day of CoQ10 improves the heart's ability to send out blood to all parts of the body. Patients who took 120 mg of CoQ10 each day for one year shortly after suffering a heart attack, had fewer free radicals in their blood as compared to patients who did not receive the supplement. In the long term, the protective action of CoQ10 may reduce the risk of a second heart attack. In addition, the patients taking CoQ10 had significantly less fatigue, a problem commonly experienced shortly after having a heart attack, compared to those who did not take the supplement.
