The Vital Role of Magnesium
By Erin Stokes, ND.

Magnesium deserves our attention for two important reasons. The first is that magnesium is vitally important for proper physiologic functions that optimize health and wellbeing. It plays a crucial supporting role in many body systems, and is found in virtually all tissues, with the highest concentrations in the skeletal and muscular systems. The second reason is that dietary intake of this mineral falls short of the RDA in over half of the United States population.1

Approximately 50% of magnesium in the adult human body is found in the skeleton. It is an essential mineral for the health of bones and teeth. In the past, most people placed the emphasis on the role of calcium in maintaining strong, healthy bones. Now, many practitioners are realizing that magnesium and other minerals are also essential for optimal bone density and strength.

After the skeletal system, the highest concentration of magnesium is found in our muscles. Approximately 25% of magnesium is found in the muscular system, and this is a system where I often see clear improvements in my clinical practice. Magnesium is absolutely necessary for proper relaxation of muscles. In this modern age, where many aspects of daily living such as stress, computer work, and driving all lead to increased muscle tension, my patients often report a noticeable beneficial impact from proper supplementation of magnesium. In addition to the roles in the skeletal and muscular systems, magnesium activates various enzymes that are vital for providing energy and helping your body function properly. It assists with ATP production, promotes healthy neurotransmitter levels and cognitive health, plays a role in blood glucose metabolism, and is important for optimal cardiovascular health.

In a country where many of us are well nourished, why are we seeing such high rates of magnesium deficiency? Part of the answer may lie in the food sources that contain the highest levels of this mineral. Magnesium is found in particularly high concentrations in nuts, seeds, beans, and leafy green vegetables, which are not a significant part of the daily diet for many Americans. Medications, physical and mental stress, poor digestive function, along with documented mineral content depletion of soil, have also been considered contributing factors.

Innate Response Formulas' Magnesium 300 Powder is an excellent choice for improving magnesium levels. It delivers a therapeutic 300 mg dose of the most well-absorbed forms of magnesium, blended with organic spinach, in a great-tasting powder that dissolves easily in water. The citrate, glycinate, and malate forms found in this clinically-effective formula have been shown to be well absorbed and helpful in restoring magnesium levels. The addition of organic spinach, a wholefood magnesium source and nutrient-dense food, enhances the utilization of Magnesium 300 Powder. I have found in my clinical practice that patients are often more likely to take a powder formula than tablet or capsule, particularly if it tastes good like this powder does!

I have also personally felt the positive effects of taking this product. On a recent business trip, I was experiencing excessive muscle tension that was contributing to a powerful headache. Seeking a natural solution, I immediately thought of the Innate Response Magnesium 300 Powder. I put one scoop into a glass of water, and drank it slowly over the course of 10-15 minutes. Within an hour, I could feel the muscle tension decreasing, and the next morning I woke up headache free.

Remember to keep the spotlight on magnesium as you are working on improving your bone health, muscular health, cognitive health, blood-glucose regulation, and energy levels. It can make a big difference in how you feel.
