Focus on Collagen and Cofactors for Bone and Joint Health National Awareness Week
by Valerie Hall, CNHP

Bone weakness in the United States is at an all-time high, so there is good reason to be mindful of Bone and Joint Health Awareness during the week of October 12-20, 2012. Weight-bearing exercise and a healthy diet are extremely important to keep our bones healthy. Americans eat more dietary calcium than any country in the world and yet we have the highest degree of osteoporosis! This alone should tell us that bone does not equal calcium. It is not so much the calcium as it is the collagen and other calcium cofactors that are important for keeping bones strong and flexible.

Collagen is the major structural protein in connective tissue. It is responsible for maintaining the strength and flexibility of bones, joints, skin, tendons, ligaments, hair, nails, blood vessels, and eyes, among other tissues throughout the body. Bone contains more collagen than minerals. When this internal collagen matrix in bone becomes dried out and brittle, it breaks easily. Collagen is also important in bone tissue to give the minerals something to hang on to. Doctor's Best Vitamins makes Best Collagen Types 1 & 3, which provides high quality, easily absorbable collagen in powder, tablets, or capsules. Collagen Types 1 & 3 are often found together in the body, as they structurally support each other. Recommended dosage ranges from 4,000 mg to 7,000 mg daily.

Calcium Bone Maker Complex from Doctor's Best is a formula that is based on current bone research, which tells us we need an absorbable form of calcium, less calcium, and more cofactors to enhance calcium deposit into the bone. With our high calcium diet, we should not be taking an additional 1,000 – 2,000 mg of calcium daily! A better supplemental range is 500 – 700 mg daily, as recommended by the World Health Organization, Dr. Weil, Dr. Mercola, and Dr. Oz. Calcium Bone Maker Complex contains 600 mg of calcium daily, in the form of MCHC (Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite). MCHC has many scientific studies proving its efficacy in building bone as it includes collagen and the other bone matrix proteins, along with bone growth factors.

It is also important to get all the cofactors to make calcium do the right thing. This includes 300 mg of magnesium malate (not oxide!) and 1,800 IU of vitamin D3 to help control calcium utilization and improve calcium absorption; 80 mcg of highly bioactive vitamin K2 (as MK-7) to assist bone calcium management and ensure that calcium is deposited only where it belongs. Other fundamental nutrients include vitamin C, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, and boron. These nutrients, along with proper diet and weight-bearing exercise will give you the building blocks your body needs to improve your bone health!
