Breast Cancer Prevention in a Pill
BY CHRISTINE HORNER, M.D.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among American women and the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths. The older a woman, the higher her risk. At age 25, her risk is 1 in 19,608. At age 40, 1 in 217. If she lives to be more than 85, her risk is 1 in 8. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2004, more than 270,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die because of it. At any given time in the United States, 2 to 3 million women have been diagnosed, treated, and cured of breast cancer, or are currently living with it. From 1999-2003, the incidence of breast cancer rose 21%.

Anyone would be upset by these alarming statistics. The best course of action is to place more focus on protecting ourselves from developing breast cancer. Many American women are making positive, lasting lifestyle choices—healthy diet, appropriate daily exercise, reducing or quitting smoking—to lower their risks. However, preventative action doesn't guarantee good health. More than 75% of the women who are diagnosed with breast cancer don't have any risk factors, which include age, genetics, race, and family history. As a physician, I observed more and more women in their 20s and 30s seeking treatment for breast cancer. When my own mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, I needed to find a way women could better protect themselves from this deadly disease.

After exhaustive research, I found that in addition to improving diet and lifestyle factors, there are many powerful nutrients proven to protect against breast cancer and do so in a multitude of ways. As a practicing physician, I learned that most patients find it difficult to change their diet and lifestyle, but they will take a pill.

So I took seven of the most effective nutrients and created Protective Breast Formula. This blend offers American women a simple and easy way to support their choice to lower their risk of breast cancer. This formula can also help those with breast cancer during their recovery and to make their chemotherapy more effective. Here are the nutrients and how they work:

DIM (diindolylmethane) – Found in all cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli, cabbage, and kohlrabi, it forces estrogen to break down into a "good" (protective, non-cancerpromoting) type of estrogen, a conversion which occurs in the liver. Scientists believe it is DIM's ability to influence the liver to make more of the "good" estrogen and less of the "bad" that may play the biggest role in lowering the risk of breast cancer.

CDG (calcium D-glucarate) – Also found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, as well as fruits, such as apples, oranges, and grapefruit. The liver manufactures a substance called glucuronic acid, which binds to toxins, including "bad" estrogen, deactivating them. The enzyme, beta-glucuronidase, can interfere, thus split the toxins off the glucuronic acid, reactivating them. Researchers have found that people with a high amount of that enzyme in their blood have an increased risk of various cancers, particularly the hormone-dependent ones. CDG comes to the rescue by deactivating beta-glucuronidase, keeping the harmful estrogens and other toxins bound to the glucuronic acid and inactive.

Green tea – Women who drink green tea have very low rates of breast cancer. It also helps chemotherapy kill more cancer cells, protect against the damage chemotherapy may cause organs, lower estrogen levels, stop new blood vessel growth to tumors, and improve a woman's chances of surviving her disease.

Maitake mushrooms – Shown to stop breast cancer tumor growth, stimulate powerful immune cells to fight the disease, and inhibit breast cancer metastasis (spreading).

Turmeric – We know it as the brightly colored spice found in curry. What most don't know is that turmeric can help block breast cancer causing toxins, shut off the blood supply to tumors, prevent tumor invasion, cause cancer cells to die, increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy, block the effect of estrogen in several ways, and improve the anti-cancer effects of both green tea and soy.

Grape seed extract – A powerful antioxidant that also blocks aromatase, an enzyme that helps make estrogen. High levels of estrogen are known to fuel breast cancer cell growth. Less aromatase = less estrogen = less breast cancer.

Vitamin D – It can make breast cancer cells more resistant to toxins, decrease the ability of breast cancer cells to grow and divide, stop the growth of new blood vessels to tumors, and stimulate the immune system.

I want every woman in America to know about the seven powerful nutrients in Protective Breast Formula. Sure, eat healthy foods, get adequate rest and exercise, and try to avoid those things that may have a negative effect on the body. But adding a good dose of specific supplements can give you the little extra help you need. And Protective Breast Formula is here to do just that.
